Microenterprise Group Advocates for Small Business |
The Microenterprise Resource Group (MERG) was established by CEDF,
and other local partners to advocate on behalf of small businesses
owners throughout Connecticut. Established in the Fall of 2004,
MERG's mission is to strengthen the resources for microenteprise in
the State of Connecticut through cooperation, education, and
advocacy. The group now has fourteen member organization
representing all parts of the state.
From May 3-5, MERG held a legislative advocacy session at the
State Capitol. During the three days, MERG set up a nine panel
exhibit highlighting the contributions of microenterprises to the
Connecticut economy. For example, there are more than 450,000
microenterprise businesses operating in Connecticut. These
businesses employ two out of every five workers. MERG and its
network of small business development partners is working to make
more resources and training available to area entrepreneurs. The
legislative exhibit made a good start.
At the end of the third day, a reception was held at the Hall of
Flags in the Capitol for State Legislators and their staff. Numerous
business owners, including a chocolate maker, fine food caterers,
soda producer, and others displayed their wares. Dozens of other
business owners joined the crowd to meet with legislators and share
their concerns.
Governor Jodi Rell gave some critical remarks, emphasizing the
key role small businesses play in our State and the many
contributions they make. She received special recognition from Donna
Wertenbach as a token of appreciation for her support of MERG. Other
dignitaries also addresses the crowd, then enjoyed a wonderful
buffet supplied by microentrepreneurs.
MERG has sponsored a bill at the Capitol which will provide
grants and assistance to agencies who support microenterprise
business owners. |
