Regina Coleman grew frustrated when trying to locate a
mathematics tutor for her 8 year old step-daughter, one that would
meet the child’s needs and the family’s budget. She found the
offerings of area tutoring agencies lacking in quality,
affordability, and flexibility. She decided to start her own
tutoring agency, founding Apados LLC, a woman owned business based
in Bloomfield. The company provides affordable tutoring services in
the greater Hartford area. Trained tutors are matched up to
individual students needs and are coordinated with the student’s
current school curriculum.
Like any start up business, Apados had its challenges in the
first year of operation. CEDF’s Business Advisor, Rich Graber,
worked with Ms. Coleman to understand her cash flow, market trends,
and general business management and contracts. CEDF also provided a
$50,000 line of credit to help Ms. Coleman with her working capital
needs. According to Ms. Coleman, "The staff at CEDF believed in me
and my business and went to bat for us. They were very
knowledgeable about our industry and more importantly understood the
circumstances I was experiencing. CEDF was completely professional
in the way the handled our paper work. We felt like we were
the only customer they had." Apados now
has contracts with the Hartford School System, Salvation Army, as
well as private tutor clients. Cash flow is progressing nicely and
Apados, and its dynamic owner Ms. Coleman, will be around as long
term helping inner city youth!
