Growing with intention in Bridgeport, Connecticut
Sound Coffees didn’t begin with a business plan or a storefront. It began with curiosity. More than a decade ago, co-owner Jeff started roasting green coffee beans at home, driven by a desire to understand coffee beyond the cup. “I’ve always appreciated coffee, but I wanted to learn where it comes from and how it’s made,” Jeff said. “Once I started, I couldn’t stop learning.”
Roasting remained a passion project for years while Jeff worked in the corporate world. Over time, encouragement from friends and neighbors, along with growing confidence in the quality of the product, led Jeff and his wife Sarah to take a more serious step. In 2020, they launched Sound Coffees out of their home during the pandemic, navigating early growth while testing demand and refining their process.
Moving beyond a cottage business (a small business operated out of a home) required a major leap. “There isn’t a gradual next step,” Jeff said. “You reach a point where you either move forward or you stop. If we were going to stay true to our values and the quality we care about, we had to move forward.”
Today, Sound Coffees roasts small-batch, responsibly sourced coffee and operates a café in Bridgeport’s Black Rock neighborhood, serving customers who value craft, story, and community. As the business expanded, Jeff and Sarah sought a financial partner who understood their goals. “We were growing quickly and needed support that aligned with what we were building,” Jeff said. “CEDF helped us take that next step without losing sight of our mission.”
Running the business has been both demanding and rewarding, especially as it has become part of family life and the neighborhood. “Small businesses matter,” Jeff said. “They create connection, build community, and when you invest in them, that impact spreads.”
