Building a Business, One Post at a Time: How H&M Fence LLC Built Success with CEDF’s Support

When Maricela Magana and her husband Humberto Perez-Ayala launched H&M Fence LLC in 2020, the world was filled with uncertainty. The pandemic had upended the economy, and like many others, they found themselves at a crossroads. With more than 25 years of fencing experience, Maricela’s husband had the technical skills, while she brought administrative expertise from her years supporting individuals through nonprofit work. The moment felt risky—but it also felt right.

"We didn't really have a choice," Maricela shared. "The company I worked for closed after COVID, and we realized if we wanted to have flexibility and build something lasting for our family, we needed to take a leap."

Starting a business during a global pandemic wasn’t easy. Supply chain disruptions made materials scarce and costly. Equipment had to be purchased upfront without the guarantee of immediate revenue. There were long hours, sleepless nights, and moments when they questioned if they could keep going. But their drive was fueled by something deeper—their son, a nationally ranked high school soccer player who would soon head to college. "Being there for him, traveling to his games, and not missing out—that flexibility is something we wouldn’t have had with traditional jobs," Maricela reflected.

H&M Fence LLC has grown steadily from those early days. What began with just Maricela, her husband, and one other employee has expanded to a team of five, offering residential and commercial fencing across Connecticut. Known for their craftsmanship and customer-first approach, H&M Fence has expanded its offerings to include custom wrought iron fencing and specialty cable railing—services that set them apart in a competitive market.

Still, navigating growth came with its own challenges. Recognizing the need for sound financial guidance and strategic support, Maricela turned to the Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF). "We found CEDF through a Google search," she said. "We were growing but needed direction on how to do it the right way."

Through CEDF, H&M Fence received a loan that helped ease cash flow constraints, along with invaluable business advising. Maricela credits their business advisor at CEDF for helping change the way they approached business decisions. "He always came to meetings with a list of questions that made us think critically about our next steps," she explained. "He encouraged us to invest in better equipment even when it felt risky. It’s helped us save time, take on more jobs, and grow more confidently."

CEDF’s support went beyond financing—it gave Maricela and her husband the reassurance they needed to trust their instincts and think long-term. "We don't feel like we’re alone trying to figure everything out," she said. "CEDF has been a blessing."

Their success hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2024, H&M Fence earned the Best Fencing Contractor Award from Quality Business Awards in West Haven, a proud milestone for a company that started with little more than determination and a dream. Giving back to their community is also central to H&M Fence’s mission. They proudly sponsor local youth sports teams, paying forward the support they've received over the years.

Looking ahead, Maricela envisions purchasing a new flatbed truck, adding more employees, and eventually buying a permanent yard, warehouse, and showroom space—moves that would solidify their presence in Connecticut’s fencing market.

Reflecting on her journey, Maricela says running H&M Fence has taught her more than she ever expected. "I’ve learned I can handle far more than I ever thought I could," she said. "Every challenge, every experience has strengthened us."
